The winemaking story of the Riccardi family dates back to the late 1800s, when the grapes grown in the vineyards were vinified in the old vat of San Rocco oratory in San Colombano (Milan). At that time, the wine obtained was used for farmers' own use or bartered for other goods. At the end of the 1940s Franco Riccardi decided to transform what had hitherto been a family passion into an entrepreneurial business by giving the wine a new image, bottling it and marketing it so it ended up on the tables of the Milanese. In the early 1950's, the first labels of the "Nettare dei Santi" were printed. This simple red wine reflected the traditions of the land. The hills of San Colombano, replete with history and tradition, needed winemakers to do them justice and win them acclaim, especially in Milan and Lazio, by creating wines bursting with freshness and and intense bouquets. After his father passed away, Enrico took over the family business and created the two wines that still symbolise the company: the Verdea La Tonsa and the Roverone. In 1980, Enrico Riccardi transferred the winery from the centre of the village to the hilltop between the vineyards, transforming it into one of the most fascinating wine-growing companies in San Colombano. With his wife Giovanna he poured all his energy into the care of the vines and into making the wine and its image one of the most sought-after in the country. Today his son Gianenrico, with the same passion and entrepreneurial drive, continues the family history of winemaking in the vineyards, producing quality grapes in an environmentally friendly way. Focus is always on quality and innovation long before the wine reaches the barrel.
