In the unspoilt land near Palizzi village in Casignana, province of Reggio Calabria, lies the Frammartino Luigi Farm, which stretches over a total area of 14 hectares of citrus groves filled with bergamot oranges, lemons, clementines and oranges. The farm mainly deals with growing and processing the bergamot oranges, a citrus fruit typically and exclusively found in the province of Reggio Calabria.
Bergamot essence, obtained from the fruit peel, has received the Protected Designation of Origin (D.O.P) recognition. "Bergamot of Reggio Calabria – essential oil" in accordance with Regulation no. 509 dated 15/03/2001. With its 350 chemical components, bergamot essence is indispensable in the perfume industry because it 'fixes' the aromatic bouquet and harmonises the other essences by bringing out the fresh and fragrant notes. Bergamot is also used in the pharmaceutical industry for its antiseptic, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral properties. On top of all this, its ability to boost melatonin release gives it antidepressant effects. Next to the plant where the essence is extracted, the company has a food factory where bergamot-based beverages, marmalades and candied fruit are produced, together with bergamot pulp juice and distilled bergamot essence. Frammartino bergamot oranges are grown using organic methods; the products, processed without using preservatives or other additives, are sold under the brand name Bergold, "bergamot gold", to evoke the beneficial proprieties and multiple uses of this extraordinary citrus fruit.
