Santa Maria del Cedro, a town on the marvellous Tyrrhenian coast, in Calabria, is the setting to this entrepreneurial story of three youngsters who grew up collecting and eating Citron fruit. This magical gift from the earth is a biblical symbol of purity and perfection, it is a fruit with an ancient history and the forefather of the citrus family.
The Citron has the greatest number of different varieties. The main one in Italy is cultivated in Calabria and is called "Cedro Liscio Diamante". Production area: La Riviera dei Cedri, a small strip of land that lies between Tortora and Paola. Both municipalities claim paternity, yet it was actually only in Santa Maria del Cedro that the spontaneous birth of this citrus fruit took place.
This is where the most perfect Citrons in the world are grown. The trees flourish full of fruit here and it is home to the greatly treasured "Cedro Liscio Diamante" variety, which is perfect for candying.
Jews come here from all over the world in the summer, so that the Rabbis can select and take back with them the perfect Citron, worthy of being offered to the divinity, for the most important Jewish celebration of the year, Sukkot or the Festival of Tabernacles!
Just as the Bible dictates: "you shall take for yourselves the foliage of beautiful trees, palm branches and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God".
And the fruit of the most beautiful tree is not just any fruit, it is a green and fragrant citrus, an ancient secret from far away.
Three young people have reclaimed their ancestors' recipes, recipes handed down through the family for generations. To offer the world elegantly presented liqueurs full of history and tradition, liqueurs that, when tasted, stop time, that take you back to the ancient stories told by grandparents of a sacred and mysterious fruit that still today, thousands of years later, is spoken about all over the world.
They transform Citron into jams and syrup and combine the production with that of Calabria figs.
Of the three, Salvatore is in charge of selecting the fruits and raw materials, while Angela follows product research and development, maintaining a firm emphasis on craftsmanship in her laboratory!
The products enjoy distinctive features such as Kosher certification and incorporate historical elements appreciated by the most refined palates, international gourmands and starred chefs, who are supplied fresh citron directly.
