In the Locride region it is also called "Mantonacu viru" (true Mantonico), setting it apart from other similar varieties. It is grown on the Ionian coast, in particular in the vicinity of Bianco and Casignana. It is a rustic variety that ripens late, the bunch is medium sized and conical in shape, it is compact with numerous "wings", and medium-short, robust stems. The grape is medium or medium-small, ellipsoid with an evident navel, a strong skin of medium thickness, pruinose and yellow-green in colour. The medium-high vigour of the plant makes it suitable for espallier cultivation with short pruning. It is very susceptible to sulphur burns, bunches can easily rot, therefore it prefers dry, well exposed and hilly soils. The grapes, which have good acidity, are best expressed as dry sparkling wines and full-bodied passito (sweet) wines. Before being pressed the grapes are dried on greenhouse gratings. The result is a sweet straw yellow wine that goes well with mature cheeses and sweet pastries.
Tenuta Dioscuri Estate is a Calabrian winery that has handed down its dedication and love for winemaking from generation to generation.
